It’s time to pass Senate Bill 249/Assembly Bill 4844 and make it easier for all New Jerseyans and businesses to choose energy options that will save us money and improve our air quality.

New Jersey’s current energy efficiency programs often do not enable choice — they provide little or no support to households that choose to lower their energy bills by switching from gas to electric equipment.

When you pass S249/A4844, you’ll ensure these programs go further to make choosing efficient electric equipment easier and more affordable so that we can unlock energy cost savings and breathe cleaner air — indoors and out.

New Jersey households can save up to 41% on annual energy bills by upgrading to highly efficient heat pumps from gas equipment, according to a recent report. And switching to electric alternatives eliminates a significant source of air pollution, which disproportionately impacts low-income households and communities of color.

This legislation not only aligns the state’s building decarbonization program with the Energy Master Plan and ensures that the state will fulfill its ambitious climate goals and emission reduction targets by 2030 and beyond, it also will help deliver cleaner air to our most vulnerable communities.

We cannot afford to delay the transition to efficient electric appliances any longer.

I urge you to support swift passage of S249/A4844 to help New Jersey reach its goals for switching buildings away from polluting fossil gas to healthier, affordable, clean energy alternatives.
